06/12/2010 d-day.

The end is here! I have 2 completed essays that I am about to hand in, and Dylan is doing the final tweaks to our film. Everything that we have worked towards over the last 4 months has come to an end! I have to say that my favorite thing that we have done is the direction film, I like all the pre production elements of it, and filming in the style on Tim Burton was always going to be fun!
I actually also liked writing the narrative & genre essay, it was an interesting subject and I felt that I did fairly well in it. It was also a bonus that I HAD to watch the entire first series of Lost in one week, for research purposes of course!
I am looking forward to our second year, I especially like the sound of the fiction adaptation unit, however, I am not sure whether or not I am looking forward to newbies! It will be nice to have some more people, as we are such a small group, but as we are the first year of this course, and we are such a small group, it may feel weird, like they are coming into our territory! lol. But I'm sure they will be lovely and we can take them all under our wings :)

Well, Merry Christmas! See you in the New Year!

The looming end of term and the Deathly Hallows..

Originally written on 25/11/2010

We now have 11days whole days until the end of semester! I have to finish off a few bits on my two essays which wont take long, and get this commission doc done and thats it!
Can't believe its been a whole year, and we're nearly in our second year! How exciting! Im not sure if I am looking forward to new people or not...this is our territory now and they will come in and take over! However it will be nice to meet some new people!

Saw Harry Potter last night it was so so so so so good, my favorite so far! It was extremely dark for a Harry Potter film, and it was just so different, for example, they weren't in Hogwarts at all!! It was just so much more..grown up, but I guess as the actors are adults now, it had to be. And they're were a few parts where I actually jumped in my seat! I cannot wait until the summer for the second part. LOVED IT!

Essays and Commission...I can nearly see the light.

The two big essays that have to be done have both taken the shape in the forms of first drafts, which is great because the template is there, so they can just be revised from there. We are editing for the commission unit now, and everything else is done, the feeling of rushed panic from last semester has gone, as the time is completely managed! I know that I will have revised my direction essay by wednesday and handed in thursday, revised my narrative & genre essay by next week, hopefully in the shape of a final draft, but if not, then it will only take a day or so more, so by then the film will be halfway there, and we have until the 6th december to really fine tune it, and then its my birthday and christmas! hurray!

Direction, edit, commission, essay draft & Shutter Island

Its been a while... :S

So to update! We have now completed one half of our direction unit! Wooo! In earlier posts I think I said that I was going to do the director Guillmoro del Toro, but as I decided it was too hard to achieve, I went for another director; Tim Burton, in which I still got to play around with dark and gothic themes which I will admit, I love! It was great fun to do, I got to turn my kitchen into a burton wonderland! AT first, I was not happy with my footage, as I feel I just dont have that creative edge when it comes to handling the camera, but with all the work I did in pre production, and the hours I spent in post, (which, by some small miracle, I am not holding at arms length anymore, I am starting to see that editing can be quite magical, and turn footage that was a bit crap, into something quite ok!) I actually am quite proud of my film, I dont get the same feeling of horror that I do when I think of my trailor!

So, onto the next unit! Commission begins next week, so this week Dylan and I have to prepare, prepare, prepare! And draft out some kind of a script.
We also have a draft essay to hand in on thursday - eek!

Another random update is that I watched Shutter Island by Martin Scorsese last night, and it was awesome! It made me shout NO! at the screen at the end because I'm still not sure if he was crazy or not! There was some great editing in it too, and yes I surprised myself by noticing the editing, as you all know editing is not my bestest friend!

Well its all very busy now, so instead of hiding in blogger, I actually need to do some work! :(

Commission

I got commissioned by a BBC executive - ohh yeaahhh. Well, sort of, by Helen & Simon really!
But anyway, I'm really pleased, and I'm really pleased with how my pitch went, I feel I was ten million times better than when we did our presentations last semester, I was abit more confident, but mostly this time, I knew exactly what I was talking about and really cared about it, I find the subject matter very interesting anyway, I did Philosophy & Ethics at A Level and I loved it, and also I just had done a lot more research and was a lot more prepared this time.

Had a really, really useful workshop this morning too, Helen did an essay writing guide and I feel so much better about writing them now, as before the Harvard Style citing was foreign to me! Thanks Helen!

Err, what have I watched recently? Oh, I watched a craaap film last week "Grown ups" with Adam Sandler, now normally "Happy Madison" films are very funny, but this was shocking! Absolutely NO storyline, wasnt really that funny, just some silly americans going to some cabin place, and they liked it. woohoo. not. Not recomended.

Looking forward to watching & enevitably judging this new reality/doc/fake doc/interent based show on Channel 4 tomorrow, "Seven Days", apparently its like a reality show, following the lives of people living in Notting Hill, but you can like vote or something on the website and unpopular "characters" will be dropped, dont really understand, but I may be surprised.. TV seems to be becoming too aware of the new ageness of computers/iphones/mobile tv watching and losing whats its all about - sitting and watching a good, entertaining show whilst layed on the sofa or bed! As you can probably tell, I am not a fan of modern ways of consuming media, I'm a traditional old, coach potato and proud of it :)

Inception, Summer is dead (wasn't ever really alive), back to uni, documentaries and michael moore.

Uh - oh its been a long time since I have posted, been to busy posting on Will and I's - doc blog! (http://cwdoccom.blogspot.com)

Well, there is a lot to talk about! After a long 3 month summer it's back to uni and straight back to work! But I wont start talking about uni until I have mentioned this summer's movie blockbuster: "Inception". - WOW. This was one of the best films I think I've ever seen, I loved it! I I thought, after hearing all the hype, I would have to watch it about ten times to appreciate and understand what the hell was going on! Even on the trailer, the big voice man says "even better, the second time around!" which loosely translated is : you have to watch it twice to actually get your head around it. However, I only watched it once (probably will watch it again though) and I think, (?) I understood it, probably helped that I watched it alone in my room with no distractions! And it was just magnificent! The concept is mind blowing, direction amazing, pictures amazing, story-line superb and it had dark and emotive undercurrents at every corner. Dreams within dreams, within dreams, stealing and controlling and planting ideas - crazy! If you have not seen this film you have majorly missed out!

Anyway! Back to university and we were thrown straight back in with a quick fire film project, that had to be titled "Summer is dead". Me and my partner in crime, Will, came across a beautiful poem entitled "Summer is dead" that we really liked and decided to have the poem read out over the top of the pictures in a voice over. The poem talks about death, so we though at church/graveyard would be fitting. I recalled a beautiful little church in a tiny little village named "leeds" only a ten minute drive from us. So off we set, we got some amazing shots, but as usual we ran out of time in the post production stages, so it is yet to be finished, but what we have so far, I'm really proud of!
Now though, we are avidly working on our Documentary Commission unit, read more about that on the blog I put at the top of the page, as well as thinking and learning about our Narrative and Genre unit. The handy thing about studying media at GCSE & A Level, a lot of this unit I have briefly covered before, we looked a lot at genre, iconography, zeitgeist, narratives, multi-strand narratives, linear narratives, equilibrium, disequilibrium and muuch more that I won't pretend I still remember. So that's going to come in useful :)
The other unit we are covering is the Direction unit, which I think we are all pretty excited about, we all pretty much know the director we have in mind, personally, I think I'm going to go with Guillermo del Toro, the director of my favorite film "Pan's Labyrinth", and others such as "Hellboy", "Hellboy 2" and "The Devil's Backbone". We will be doing that one in a chunk of 6 weeks once Simon returns, very tired, from paternity leave! :)
One last thing I will ramble on about is, Michael Moore's "Bowling for Columbine", a film about gun crime in the U.S, and using the Columbine massacre as a main narrative. Now my first thing to say about this is - Americans are VILE, gross, obese, stupid pigs! OK, so thats a harsh generalization, but the film greatly angered me! I have seen it once before but I was younger then so didn't really pay that much attention. Moore is brilliant at unpacking the truth, or his views of the truth, with excellent, humorous, emotive, angering and saddening sequences.
p.s Charlton Heston is evil.

Stress!

The past few weeks we have all been working flat out! Getting all our work done, although I must say, even though through tiredness I have acquired a lovely sty in my eye, I have actually quite enjoyed this work, it is no where near as grimacing as previous coursework and essays have beenin A Level etc, And I'm very excited to get it all done!

Law abiding citizen

I watched the film "Law abiding citizen" with Gerard Butler and Jamie Fox last night and - wow! It's the best film i've seen for a while! I really liked it! It had an excellent, dare I say realistic; portrayal of the corrupt justice system- the fact that a judge in America would flippantly free a murderer because they didn't have enough evidence, or the fact that she jailed a man that murdered and raped a woman and killed a child for only 3 years was hard hitting. It was also one of those films where the good guy turns into the bad guy, but the audience still quite like him or understand him.
I also watched "The Box" the other day with Cameron Diaz, but that didn't quite have the same affect on me as "Law abiding citizen", it started out good, but became quite slow and far too complicated and out there, it turned rather silly if I'm honest. However, it did have a good portrayal of people and their morals and selfishness, people will do anything for money!

Well lets not lie, The Door was a pretty crap show in the end, quite disappointed by it, however it was amaazing to see the finished product, however rubbish it was, I think I annoyed everyone with my "I did that! ", "I filled those jars", "Me and Cat co-made that suit!" etc etc..I also think that the way i was shown was really weird, it was almost like we were shown a trailer for it.. I didnt feel like we really got in there with the action..

Where is the second series of Cape Wrath??

It must have been over a year ago, but does anyone remember a drama series on channel 4 called "Cape Wrath" it was such a weird, conspiracy theory show about people in witness protection, but I loved it! And at the end of the series I assumed there would be a second as it was so inconclusive yet made me want to know more! But I have not heard a thing about it since :(

Another series I loved was BBC's "Mistresses", I used to watch it every tuesday at 9pm with my mum! There was 2 seasons, and I know the last one was exactly a year ago in march but again I have heard nothing to say there is a 3rd :( :(

Atonement

This sneaky little movie! The twist was a little sad! I kinda thought that when Robbie was lying on the ground that night that he was going to die, but I forgot that thought because the story carried on! And then he did actually die that night! And the scene in Cecelia's flat with Briony, wasn't actually real, but reflecting back I'm actually glad it wasn't because it felt a little odd and fake to the story, there was no big reunion between Robbie and Cecelia, and the whole scene just felt a little unrealistic. All in all, it was beautifully shot, the location of the house at the beginning of the film is so beautiful, I want to get married there! And the 5 min steadicam shot, that Simon had shown us was amazing, I liked it very much :)

I love Merlin

I have alwaaays loved magical kind of fairy tales since I was little, and yesterday I watched one I havnt seen for years, "Merlin", i think there is probably quite a few versions of this story but I'm talking about the 2, hour and a half part one with Sam Neil, Helena Bonham Carter, Isabella Rosellini and Anthony Hopkins plus a huge number of other stars, its such a beautiful story which captures me, from the character of Merlin to the silly little comic sidekick to the evil Queen Mab, Frick, the characters capture me and I am amazed till the very end!

Hack to Wag Pitch

My Real Life

Fish Tank

I watched Andrea Arnold's "Fish Tank" on sunday morning as Simon had advised me to do, it was a great film, really natural and believable. Me and my boyfriend also got excited because we recognized quite a few of the locations from Dartford! The ending was a little weird, especially when she sat and peed on the living room carpet? But all in all it was enjoyable and I can see why Simon told me to watch it.

The Door

Well working on the itv set of The Door completely confirmed that I want to work in this industry. I loved every minute, and being in the atmosphere was a real buzz. After about half an hour I got used to the celebrities and just saw them as people there doing there job like I was. I also loved having to get suited up and crawl into tunnels and cover them in gunge and slime ready for the celebrities to the play the game in. I was really really nervous about going and thought people may be rude and mean but it wasnt scary at all, i loved it.

Mission Interveiw

The Short Script

Title: Mission Interview

The Idea: 28 year old Clarrissa wants a change of career to be closer to her fiancĂ©. She applies to a major bank in New York City, and gets an interview. Swapping her army uniform for a professional looking pencil skirt and blouse, she should feel daunted by entering a stereotypical ‘mans world’ but with her ex military, ballsy attitude she just feels daunted by the skirt. On the day of her interview, Clarrissa unwillingly pulls on the professional and uncomfortable outfit, and makes her way to New York’s financial district; Wall Street. But unbeknown to her she faces a challenge that is a little more familiar to her than she would expect. Whilst in her interview Clarrissa hears gun shots and commotion outside the office that she and the employer are in. They soon discover that the bank is being help up and a robbery is taking place.

Character: Female, American, career driven, professional, ballsy, no nonsense, ex military, but wants a fresh career change in banking. Name- Clarrissa.

Structure:

First scene will be Clarrissa in her bedroom, there is a shot of a photograph of her in her army uniform on location, and then we see her putting on her new office type outfit and applying lipstick. (Max scene length 30 seconds)

The next scene would be her walking through New York, she could trip on her heels or be hitching up her skirt to show she is uncomfortable, and then she walks up the stairs to the bank in which she has an interview (Max 30 seconds)

Next scene would be 2 men in a van in an ally wearing balaclavas, holding empty sacks and guns, there should be some dialogue between them about what they are about to do. This would be the hook and the problem (TP1). (30 seconds)

Then cut to Clarrissa shaking hands with a suited man and following him into his office. (Max 10 seconds)

Sitting at the desk with her interviewer he asks her typical interview questions and she explains why she wants this job in a New York bank, coming from something so different. (20 seconds)

Then Clarrissa and bank manager hear gunshot and screaming. They hear a man saying “this is a holdup”. Clarrissa in her nature, says something like “oh god damn it, why today, stupid dumbass f***s” and she goes into the main part of the bank. (20 seconds)

Next scene the men have hold of an innocent woman and they are holding a gun to her head, they tell cashier to hand over the money or they will kill her. The woman is hysterical and is begging for them to let her go, one says “b**** will you shut up”

Next, Clarrissa confronts the men and tells them to let the woman go. The men are amused by Clarrissa’s confrontation and laugh her off. (30 seconds)

TP2– The woman that the men have held captive exclaims that she is going into labour. (10 seconds)

Point of no return: Clarrissa pulls off her high heels and earrings. (5-10seconds)

The next scene shows Clarrissa holding up the heel of her shoe to one of the men and repeats “let her go”. She then fights the one not holding the woman of them off and knocks him out. She again tells man 2 to let the woman go, he then turns the gun on her and the other woman drops to the floor. (30-40 seconds)

The man holding the gun gets Clarissa backed up against a wall and pushes the gun to her head, there is a lot of struggling, a close up of his finger on the trigger going further down, it looks as though she is about to die, but in the last second she kicks him in his private area and the gun shot goes off into the air. She wrestles the gun from him and then holds him captive on the floor. (Final Climax, 1 minute)

Breathing space

She then gives the gun to a very timid, skinny geeky little man and tells him to make sure he doesn’t move. This would be a comedic element to it, as this little geeky man has been given some power and he would say something like “yeah that’s right man, you stay there” but would be shaking still. (20 seconds)

The next scene would be of Clarrissa going to the aid of the woman in labour; she would also call the police and an ambulance for the woman.

The woman tells Clarrissa that it is too late for hospital and that the baby is coming now, so Clarrissa has to help her give birth.

The next scene would cut to Clarrissa holding the baby (actually showing the birth is unnecessary) she would be emotional and smiling. (20 seconds)

The experience of childbirth creates a huge effect on Clarrissa and is completing contrasting to the earlier scenes. Clarrissa seems softened and lightened by the experience. She has come on a journey from scary military woman, to prospective professional career woman, back to manly type behaviour and then by the end she has embraced the joys of womanhood.

Theme: Being a woman in a mans world.

Fictional pitch for my Hack to Wag idea.

Mousy, bookworm girl next door starts new school and faces challenge from the elite girls; be one of them or be an outcast. Think St.Trinians meets Footballer's Wives.

A Spaced treatment

This off-beat comedy drama is like no other. Following the lives of eccentric characters, you get a first hand look at their crazy goings-on in their seemingly normal lives.

hese 5 twenty somethings would appear to be like most people their age, but when government spies turn up at their local pub looking for Daisy and you see Mike roaming around at night in his army get up and guns you can immediately tell that their lifestyles are perhaps not so normal or dull after all.

Fun humour and slapstick sketches make relatable, amirable characters It's beer, drugs and a hilarious mock n roll shooting game.

The real shooting locations and attention to detail really gives this story about 5 20 somethings just living in London, a real edge and a quality of humour which is quite rare.

Generation Celebrity: The rise of the talentless star.

On tuesday with Helen, she gave us a huge range of newspapers and magazines to inspire us into coming up with our own idea of a story. The first paper that I picked up was tabloid The Sun. Obviously this paper was very celebrity led, with mainly stories of footballers, footballers indiscretions, or their wives and girlfriends. This got me to thinking that, although society has always obsessed over celebrities, they used to be famous for a reason- i.e actor/actress/singer etc. Well there now seems to be a new generation of talentless celebs who have slept with a footballer or been on reality tv, and got their boobs out, and this got me a little riled! So I came up with the idea to do a documentary about that. After a little brainstorming, I remembered the journalist/presenter Dawn Porter, who I really like, and all the shows she had done before had been very hands on documentaries so that she could experience what she was talking about. Therefore my idea was this...

"Dawn Porter: Hack to Wag in 10 days"

Channel 4, 8.00pm, 1 hr long.

Pitch - Journalist Dawn Porter gets to grips with the new generation of celebrity by becoming a wag! Follow her ten day journey from tanning with Danielle Lloyd, lunching with Bianca Gascoigne, stumbling out of London's Chinawhite with the best of them and advice from Katie Price on how to make the front pages of "Hello".

Treatment- Famous writer and journalist Dawn Porter, known for her cutting edge, hands on documentaries, is this time taking on the world of the wags. The nation seems to loathe the celebrity world but yet is still fascinated by it. Dawn wants to find out why this is. Is it as simple as getting a boob job and a fake tan to get on the cover of "Nuts"? Or marrying a footballer so that "OK" and "Hello" will cover your wedding? Dawn wants to discover whether this new breed of celebrity women are just blonde airheads or savvy business women. We send her off to a consultation with a plastic surgeon, and encourage her to stumble out of London's top clubs where the eager paparazzi await, and get her to quiz the WAG's about being role models.

We all ended up doing documentary, sorry simon!

Spaced

We had the extremely hard task of watching "Spaced" first thing monday morning.. which you can imagine was very enjoyable, I had never seen it before and I had been missing out, it was very funny, and the humor was of my taste, very quirky. We were asked to write a pitch for it, and this was mine:
"5 eccentric twenty something's (and Colin the dog) living, loving and laughing in London town. Authentic British culture in a surreal format. It's "Green Wing" VS "Family Guy".

Later that afternoon with Helen, we watched a Panorama documentary "I helped my daughter die" in which I wished I wasnt in a room with other people because I didnt want anyone to see the fact that I was welling up a little! But thankfully no one did! We were then asked to write a billing for it for the "Radio Times" this was mine:

"Jeremy Vine describes a harrowing story in a documentary following the journey of mother Kay Guilderdale who takes on trying to clear her name of attempted murder in what was really a compassionate aid to end her daughters suffering."0

The Beginning

I have started my new course, Broadcast Media, at uca this week, and so far loving it, today we were given a challenge to make a 3 minute video with the new cameras that we had never used before, with the word "life" in the title. The tricky thing was we were not allowed to do any post production editing, so we had to shoot the whole thing in sequence. It was actually a lot of fun, although looking back on my film, I would love to actually be able to add some music sampling to it etc. For example my story was called "My real life" and was about a young girl who hadn't had a very the best of childhoods, it was a very truthful story with a documentary type format to it, with pretty much all testimonial shots. I really vision the line of a song running through the credits "Do you want the truth or something beautiful" .
Being at Maidstone Studios to study is such an exciting prospect and I am looking forward to the rest of the course! :)
